There are now five generations of employees in the workplace and they range from under 20-years-old to more than 71-years-old¹. Traditional group benefits don't come with enough flexibility to satisfy² such a broad range of employees. Today we'll look at each of these generations and how they might use their group benefits. The five generations of employees in the workplace:

  1. Generation Z (born between 1997 and 2012) – These are the group of digital natives who don’t know life without smartphones and may have a need for constant stimulation.
  2. Millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) – Nearly all millennials use the internet and 19% of them use the internet solely on their smartphones. They’re more likely to give to charity than any other generation and they’re also known as Generation Y.
  3. Generation X (born between 1965 and 1980) – This generation values independence and work-life balance. They’re the first generation exposed to mass corporate layoffs.
  4. Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) – The Boomers are now retiring—10,000 per day in the United States—but participating in part-time work to keep active and fund retirement.
  5. The Silent Generation (born between 1928 and 1945) – This generation is the healthiest and wealthiest generation to date. Many reports don’t include this generation in the Canadian workforce, but they make up less than 1% of the American workforce.
